Painting I: Color Block Project

The block painting is our first foray into the realm of color for Painting I. Scary eh? These colored shapes are not exactly subtle. Color reflects from all directions from one object to the next. The final piece will be bold and saturated, however, everyone starts with a neutral gray background and draws the composition with a white conte’ or white charcoal. The first layer of paint is to be subtle, lights and darks are blocked in with neutral tones to bring out the shadows. This helps unify the piece and clarify the value structures. This informs and brings context to the colors in the next layer.  Check out the start!
