Hair #2 - Painting Study of Hair

This is an oil painting study of hair. The way her hair is draped over her mouth contains a psychological conflict I enjoyed exploring with this piece. This piece does not contain an overt meaning, the viewer can decide for themselves the true meaning of Hair #2. However, an oil painting study like this one offers me an opportunity to experiment with some of the basic elements of art in a smaller format. The main reason I painted this piece was to study the light and structure of the skin along with the volume and movement of hair. I am really happy with the final results.

Hair - A Portrait Study

This is a portrait painting study of hair.  I like the contemplative mood of the figure and the immediacy and movement of the paint. Unlike my more finished works, studies offer me an opportunity to experiment with some of the basic elements of art. In this case I was experimenting with brush work and the effects of keeping the movement of the paint active. I like the static volumetic figure contrasted with the linear movement of the hair. A sister painting - Hair #2 - can be found here.

Face #2

This 8" x 8" self portrait color study is on black cotton rag paper. It is a whimsical, yet aggressive self portrait with a sneering mouth.  The reason I chose this pose was to study the extreme moevements of my face in preparation for an animation. An animation based on this pose was never created, however I came away with an interesting couple pieces to put on display.  Face #1 is its companion piece.

Face - Study of Lips

This 8" x 8" self portrait color study is on black cotton rag paper. It is a whimsically cropped painting of my lips, eyes and nose. The purpose of this painting was to study the extreme movements of my face and lips in preparation for an animation. An animation based on this pose was never created, however I came away with an interesting couple pieces to put on display. Face #2 is its companion piece.
